China’s domestic passenger vehicle market is expected to recover slightly in 2027 after a sharper-than-expected decline in sales this year. Industry projections indicate that sales could increase by a median of 2% next year, offering a modest recovery for the world’s largest automotive market.
Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the China Passenger Car Association, said on October 26 that domestic passenger vehicle sales are expected to fall to 18.5 million units in 2026, compared with 23.7 million vehicles in 2025.
The forecast points to a difficult year for China’s automotive industry, followed by a limited improvement in domestic demand in 2027.
China’s domestic passenger vehicle sales are projected to drop significantly in 2026. The expected total of 18.5 million vehicles would represent a substantial decrease from the 23.7 million recorded in 2025.
The decline highlights the challenges facing automakers in a highly competitive market. Manufacturers are competing for customers while adjusting production plans and sales strategies to changing market conditions.
The latest forecast suggests that the domestic market could experience a more severe slowdown than previously expected, putting pressure on carmakers that depend heavily on sales within China.
Despite the expected downturn, industry projections point to a modest recovery next year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales are forecast to rise by a median of 2% in 2027.
A recovery of this size would indicate an improvement in demand, although it would not necessarily return sales to their 2025 level.
Automakers will be watching consumer demand closely as they plan new models, production volumes and marketing strategies for the coming year. The pace of recovery will be important for manufacturers, suppliers and dealerships operating across China.
China is a major centre for electric vehicle production and automotive innovation. Domestic manufacturers, including companies developing electric and plug-in hybrid models, compete with international brands for market share.
The market has also become an important battleground for advanced vehicle technology, pricing and new product launches.
However, the latest sales forecast indicates that strong competition does not automatically translate into growth across the entire domestic market. Manufacturers may need to adjust their strategies as demand changes.

China’s automotive market is closely watched by international manufacturers and suppliers because of its size and influence on the global industry.
A decline in domestic sales can affect production decisions, component suppliers and competition between Chinese and international brands. A modest recovery in 2027 could provide some support, but the forecast suggests that manufacturers should not assume a rapid return to previous sales levels.
The projected 2% increase will therefore be an important indicator for the industry as companies prepare for the next phase of market competition.
For now, the outlook points to a challenging 2026 followed by limited growth in 2027. Actual sales will depend on how market conditions develop over the coming months.
