A Delhi-bound Air India flight had to return to London’s Heathrow Airport on Sunday shortly after taxiing for takeoff. The reason was unusual: a passenger who issued a boarding pass did not board the plane. The incident caused a delay and highlighted airport security procedures.

Flight AI 162 Delayed Before Takeoff

Flight AI 162, operating from London Heathrow to Delhi on September 21, 2025, was already delayed by around 45 minutes before it started moving toward the taxiway. While the delay was initially routine, the situation escalated when the crew discovered a passenger with a valid boarding pass was missing.

The Passenger Went to Arrivals Instead of Departure

An Air India spokesperson explained:

"Flight AI 162 returned to the gate shortly after pushback because a passenger, despite having their boarding pass scanned and being marked as boarded, did not actually board the aircraft. The passenger had mistakenly gone to the arrivals area instead of the departure gate after having their boarding pass scanned."

Security Protocols and Flight Delay

Following standard security procedures, the flight returned to the gate to offload the missing passenger’s baggage. This step was required to comply with international aviation regulations. After the baggage was removed, the flight departed for Delhi, though with a further delay.

The spokesperson added, "The passenger was detained by airport security officials for questioning. Our flight crew followed the necessary procedures, and the decision to return was made to ensure compliance with security regulations. We regret the delay in the flight's departure caused by this incident."

The total number of passengers on board was not immediately disclosed, but the incident caused minor inconvenience for travelers as the aircraft returned to the gate and underwent additional checks. Passengers were advised to remain near departure gates and follow staff instructions carefully.
