Delhi to Rishikesh in 3 Hours? Namo Bharat Extension Plan Explained

Delhi to Rishikesh travel could become much faster if a proposed extension of the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) receives approval.

The proposal seeks to extend the existing Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor beyond Modipuram in Meerut towards Haridwar and Rishikesh. The proposed extension is expected to cover around 150 kilometres and could reduce travel time from Delhi-NCR to Rishikesh to roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

For people travelling from Delhi and nearby parts of the National Capital Region, the project could make weekend trips, religious visits and tourism journeys more convenient.

How Much Time Could the New Route Save?

Road travel between Delhi and Rishikesh currently takes around five to six hours in many situations. Weekend and holiday traffic can make the journey even longer.

The proposed rapid transit connection could bring the journey time down to approximately three hours. Faster rail connectivity would offer an alternative to road travel and could make short trips to Uttarakhand easier to plan.

The project would also improve access to Haridwar, one of India's major pilgrimage destinations, before continuing towards Rishikesh.

Why Rishikesh Could Benefit

Rishikesh attracts visitors for several reasons, including spirituality, yoga, meditation and adventure tourism. The city is known for its temples, ashrams and location along the Ganges.

Adventure travellers also visit the area for activities such as white-water rafting, trekking and camping. Rishikesh is also an important gateway for people travelling towards the Char Dham pilgrimage destinations.

Better connectivity could increase tourist footfall and create additional opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, tour companies and other local businesses.

Project Is Still at Proposal Stage

The proposed Meerut-Haridwar-Rishikesh extension has not yet received final approval for construction. Uttarakhand has urged the Centre to consider extending the Namo Bharat network beyond Meerut.

Feasibility studies, planning and necessary government approvals would be required before construction can begin. The final route, stations, project cost and completion timeline would also depend on decisions taken by the authorities.

Travellers should therefore not treat the three-hour journey time as an immediate travel option. It represents the expected travel time under the proposed project.

Delhi-Uttarakhand Connectivity Is Improving

The proposal comes alongside other transport projects aimed at improving connectivity between Delhi and Uttarakhand.

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has already reduced road travel time between the two cities under favourable traffic conditions. A rapid rail connection towards Haridwar and Rishikesh could add another faster travel option.

Together, road and rail infrastructure could make popular destinations in Uttarakhand more accessible from Delhi-NCR.

If approved and completed as proposed, the Namo Bharat extension could significantly change how people travel between Delhi-NCR and Rishikesh.
