Global electric vehicle sales increased for the fifth consecutive month in July, with strong demand across Europe helping offset weaker sales in China and North America.
Sales of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles reached 1.85 million units in July, representing a 9% increase compared with the same month last year, according to data from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.
Global EV sales have now reached 11.5 million vehicles so far this year, highlighting continued growth in electric mobility despite significant differences between major markets.
Europe emerged as the strongest major EV market in July, with sales increasing 33% to 450,000 vehicles.
Year-to-date EV sales in Europe have risen 28%, supported in part by the return of government subsidy programmes in several major automotive markets.
France recorded an 81% increase in EV sales during July, while Germany posted growth of 46% and Britain recorded a 43% rise.
Analysts said the renewed availability of EV incentives in several European countries has helped strengthen consumer demand for electric vehicles.
China remained the world's largest EV market, but sales declined in July.
Sales of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in China fell 5% to 980,000 units compared with the same period last year.
The decline comes as Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers increasingly look toward international markets to maintain growth.
China continues to dominate global EV production and sales, but increasing competition and changing consumer demand are creating new challenges for manufacturers operating in the domestic market.
North America recorded an even sharper decline in July, with EV sales falling 27% to 140,000 vehicles.
The decline followed the removal of federal electric vehicle tax credits in the United States, which had previously provided an important incentive for consumers considering EV purchases.
The reduction in financial incentives has contributed to weaker demand in the region and widened the gap between North American and European EV sales growth.

Electric vehicle sales outside Europe, China and North America increased significantly during July.
Sales in the rest of the world jumped 97% to 280,000 vehicles, according to the latest industry data.
The sharp increase suggests that EV adoption is expanding beyond the traditional major markets, although the overall volumes remain smaller compared with China, Europe and North America.
July's figures highlight the growing differences between major electric vehicle markets.
Europe is benefiting from renewed incentives and strong consumer demand, while China is facing a decline in domestic sales and manufacturers are increasingly looking overseas for growth.
North America, meanwhile, is dealing with weaker demand following changes to government incentives.
Despite these regional differences, global EV sales continue to expand, with July marking the fifth consecutive month of year-on-year growth.
The latest figures indicate that electric vehicles continue to gain ground globally, although government policies, consumer incentives and market conditions are playing a major role in determining where sales are growing fastest.
Europe's strong performance helped global sales increase in July despite declines in two major markets.
With 11.5 million EVs already sold globally during the year, manufacturers and policymakers are closely watching demand trends as competition intensifies and countries adjust their electric vehicle policies.
