Indian Railways Moves Toward 160 Kmph Train Operations After Kavach Trials

Indian Railways is moving ahead with higher-speed train operations after successful trials of the Kavach automatic train protection system at 160 kmph. The trials are part of efforts under Mission Raftaar to improve both train safety and travel speed on upgraded railway corridors.

Kavach has been successfully commissioned across key sections of the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah high-density routes. The system is designed to automatically apply brakes when required and help prevent trains from passing signals at danger.

160 Kmph Kavach Trials Completed

Indian Railways has conducted successful 160 kmph trials using a Vande Bharat trainset on the Chipyana Buzurg-Tundla section of the Delhi-Howrah route. The trials were part of extensive testing before higher-speed operations are expanded on suitable sections.

Earlier, more than 20,000 km of passenger trial runs were completed during testing of Kavach on the Prayagraj-Kanpur section. Trials included different WAP-7 locomotive configurations and a 20-coach Vande Bharat trainset.

Vande Bharat and Other Trains

The Kavach rollout is expected to support faster operations for trains running on routes where the tracks, signalling, overhead equipment and rolling stock are capable of handling higher speeds.

Indian Railways has already identified multiple train services for Kavach-enabled operations on commissioned sections. Additional trains, including Vande Bharat services, are being progressively included.

This means the 160 kmph capability applies to suitable upgraded sections rather than automatically increasing the speed of every train across the railway network.

What Is Kavach?

Kavach is India's indigenous Automatic Train Protection system. It is designed to improve railway safety by monitoring train movement and automatically applying brakes when necessary.

Kavach Version 4.0 has been progressively deployed across India's high-density railway corridors. As of July 31, 2026, it had been commissioned on 2,633 route kilometres covering sections of the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes.

More Routes Being Prepared for Higher Speeds

Indian Railways is also expanding trackside Kavach infrastructure. Work has been taken up across 21,794 route kilometres covering major and identified sections of the network. The government has also said that Kavach implementation is being expanded to more locomotives and EMU/MEMU trains.

The next phase includes the Ghaziabad-Tundla section, where Kavach is being introduced with 160 kmph train operations as one of the objectives of Mission Raftaar.

Faster Travel With Safety Technology

The move toward 160 kmph operations is part of a broader effort to increase the speed potential of Indian railway tracks. Higher speeds depend not only on Kavach but also on track quality, signalling, overhead equipment, locomotives and modern coaches.

For passengers, the expansion of 160 kmph-capable sections could reduce travel times on important routes while Kavach provides an additional layer of automatic safety protection.
