Jaguar Unveils $130,500 Electric Type 01 in US Market Gamble

Jaguar has unveiled its new Type 01 all-electric luxury car in New York, making a bold move to attract wealthy American buyers to its next generation of electric vehicles.

The four-door electric GT starts at $130,500 and features a long bonnet, a design inspired by classic Jaguar sports cars and no conventional rear window. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sees the model as an important part of its plan to rebuild the Jaguar brand and expand its presence in the United States.

Luxury Electric Car Designed for the US Market

The Type 01 comes in muted, understated colours and combines luxury with advanced technology. Its design takes inspiration from Jaguar's E-type sports cars from the 1960s, a model that remains popular among collectors.

Jaguar first showed its Type 00 concept in 2024 as part of a major brand relaunch. The concept attracted strong reactions from car enthusiasts and some politicians because of its unusual styling.

The production Type 01 continues that design direction while offering a more practical four-door format aimed at the luxury grand touring market.

Jaguar Bets on Wealthy American Customers

The $130,500 starting price makes the Type 01 a major bet on high-income customers in the United States. Electric vehicle demand in America has not grown as strongly as it has in some European markets, creating a challenge for luxury brands moving toward fully electric lineups.

JLR plans to increase its focus on US customers as the European auto industry faces pressure from lower-cost Chinese electric cars, higher tariff expenses and wider disruptions affecting global vehicle supply chains.

The company hopes wealthy technology executives, business leaders and other luxury-car buyers will be willing to pay a premium for an electric Jaguar that combines performance, design and technology.

Jaguar Moves Toward an All-Electric Lineup

JLR has committed to shifting Jaguar's entire vehicle range toward electric power as part of its wider transformation plan. The strategy comes at a time when some luxury-car executives remain uncertain about whether high-income customers are ready to abandon petrol-powered vehicles.

Other luxury manufacturers have faced similar challenges.

Ferrari received heavy criticism earlier in 2026 following the launch of its first electric model, with some customers and enthusiasts questioning its design and connection to the brand's traditional petrol-powered cars.

Bentley also introduced its first electric vehicle last month, positioning it at the lower end of its price range to test demand among wealthy customers.

Lamborghini has decided against launching an electric vehicle before the end of the decade, while McLaren has said its customers have shown little interest in moving away from petrol engines.

Jaguar Faces Wider Business Challenges

The Type 01 launch comes as JLR works to recover from major business difficulties. A cyberattack last year disrupted production and affected suppliers, adding pressure to the company.

JLR has also announced plans to reduce its workforce by nearly 10% through voluntary job cuts over the next two years as part of a turnaround programme.

The company now faces the challenge of rebuilding Jaguar while investing heavily in electric vehicles. The Type 01 will therefore serve as an important test of whether wealthy US buyers are willing to embrace Jaguar's new electric identity.

Jaguar's EV Strategy Faces a Critical Test

The Type 01 represents more than a new luxury car for Jaguar. It is a key part of the brand's attempt to create a new identity around electric vehicles, modern technology and high-end design.

Success in the United States could give Jaguar stronger momentum as it moves toward an all-electric future. However, weak demand could increase pressure on the company to rethink how quickly luxury customers are ready to make the switch from petrol engines to electric cars.
