Laser Beam Disorients Malaysia Airlines Pilot Before Kolkata Landing

Post by : Saif

Malaysia Airlines flight MH-184, carrying 159 passengers from Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata, faced a disruption during its final approach after a laser beam was reportedly directed toward the cockpit. The incident briefly affected the pilot's vision and forced the aircraft to circle before making another landing attempt. The flight eventually landed safely, with passengers and crew reported safe.

Laser Beam Hits Cockpit During Final Approach

Flight MH-184 was approaching Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata when the pilot reportedly noticed a bright laser beam flashing toward the cockpit.

The aircraft was around eight nautical miles from the runway at the time. The sudden flash reportedly distracted and briefly disoriented the pilot, creating a safety concern during one of the most critical stages of flight.

The crew delayed the landing and the aircraft circled overhead before making another approach.

Flight MH-184 eventually landed safely at around 11:25 pm. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.

Police Investigate Laser Incident

Malaysia Airlines informed Kolkata airport authorities about the incident after the aircraft landed.

Airport authorities also brought the matter to the attention of the airport police. Officials are working to identify the source of the laser beam and determine how it was directed toward the aircraft.

Laser lights around airports are prohibited because powerful beams can temporarily affect pilots' vision and cause serious distraction during take-off and landing.

Laser Lights Pose Aviation Safety Risk

Pilots require clear visibility and concentration while operating an aircraft during final approach. Even a short exposure to an intense laser beam can cause glare, visual impairment or temporary disorientation.

Similar laser incidents have been reported around airports in the past, particularly during festivals and public events where powerful lighting equipment is used.

The Kolkata incident has once again raised concerns about the use of laser devices near aircraft flight paths. Authorities are investigating the source of the beam and whether it was deliberately directed toward the Malaysia Airlines flight.
