Myanmar Rejects ASEAN Envoy Role and Call for Aung San Suu Kyi’s Release

Myanmar's military-backed government has rejected calls for continued involvement by an ASEAN special envoy and pushed back against demands for the unconditional release of detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myanmar's Foreign Ministry said the appointment and continued role of the ASEAN chair's special envoy were no longer necessary, pointing to the country's recent election as a reason for its position.

The move comes days after Myanmar's leader Min Aung Hlaing visited Thailand, where discussions focused on improving Myanmar's relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and addressing the country's prolonged political crisis.

Myanmar Rejects Continued ASEAN Special Envoy

Myanmar's Foreign Ministry said ASEAN no longer needed a special envoy for the country following an election held around the end of last year and the beginning of this year.

The election, held in December and January, was widely criticised and took place without significant opposition participation. A military-backed political party won the election, allowing then-junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to become president.

Myanmar's leadership has remained excluded from high-level ASEAN meetings because of its failure to implement the bloc's five-point peace consensus.

The regional organisation has repeatedly called for an end to violence, dialogue among opposing sides and humanitarian assistance as part of its efforts to address the crisis.

Myanmar Parliament Calls ASEAN Plan Interference

Myanmar's military-aligned parliament rejected ASEAN's peace plan last month, describing the regional bloc's approach as interference in the country's internal affairs.

The parliament also called on ASEAN to reconsider its position toward Myanmar.

Thailand, however, has continued to push for greater engagement between Myanmar and ASEAN.

Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said after meeting Min Aung Hlaing in Bangkok that Thailand wanted peace and stability in Myanmar and remained committed to ASEAN's efforts.

ASEAN Calls for Suu Kyi's Release

Myanmar's latest statement followed an ASEAN statement calling for the unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners.

ASEAN also said its current special envoy, the Philippine foreign minister, should be allowed to meet Suu Kyi.

The development came shortly after Suu Kyi met an official from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Naypyidaw. It was the first publicly reported meeting between Suu Kyi and a foreign representative since her detention, according to the information provided.

Suu Kyi, who is 81, is serving an 18-year sentence after being convicted of several offences that she has denied.

Myanmar Says Release Must Follow Law

Myanmar's Foreign Ministry rejected the demand for an unconditional release, saying any full release would have to take place according to the country's laws.

The ministry said sentences imposed on Suu Kyi had already been commuted on humanitarian grounds but maintained that further action would depend on legal procedures.

The issue of Suu Kyi's detention remains one of the biggest points of disagreement between Myanmar's military-backed authorities and ASEAN.

Myanmar Crisis Continues

Myanmar has remained in turmoil since the military removed the elected civilian government led by Suu Kyi in 2021.

The coup triggered widespread protests and armed resistance, eventually developing into a nationwide conflict involving the military, ethnic armed organisations and other opposition forces.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, creating a major humanitarian and political challenge for Southeast Asia.

ASEAN has continued to face difficulties in finding a unified approach toward Myanmar, while Thailand has pushed for renewed regional engagement.

Myanmar's rejection of the ASEAN envoy role and its refusal to commit to Suu Kyi's unconditional release are likely to keep tensions between Naypyidaw and the regional bloc high.
