A leap toward smarter, more scalable charging for fleet operators
In a major step toward accelerating the electrification of commercial transport, MAN Truck & Bus has officially unveiled its Smart Charging Cube, a game-changing modular charging solution tailored for electric truck fleets. The innovative system promises to dramatically simplify EV infrastructure demands, reduce grid load, and provide scalable, intelligent charging for growing electric fleets—particularly crucial for logistics and distribution hubs transitioning to zero-emission transport.
As cities and countries worldwide tighten environmental regulations and carbon targets, fleet operators are under mounting pressure to electrify quickly—but the complexity and cost of deploying sufficient charging infrastructure remain critical barriers. MAN’s Smart Charging Cube aims to change that narrative.
Smart, Compact, and Modular by Design
At the heart of the Smart Charging Cube’s appeal is its modular and scalable architecture, making it uniquely suited to both small and large depot applications. Rather than relying on extensive civil engineering or electrical upgrades that can slow EV transitions, the Cube acts as a compact, pre-configured energy module that’s easy to deploy and connect.
Each unit is designed to be grid-independent or grid-supplementary, depending on the site’s infrastructure. Inside, the system houses integrated power electronics, battery buffers, and smart load management software that dynamically adjusts energy distribution between charging vehicles, minimizing strain on the grid and reducing peak load costs.
The setup allows a fleet depot to connect multiple charging points without requiring equivalent upstream power capacity—crucial in areas where grid enhancements are slow or cost-prohibitive. For fleet managers, that means faster deployments, lower energy bills, and improved operational uptime.
Charging Up to 12 Electric Trucks Simultaneously
One of the standout features is the system's capacity to support up to 12 electric trucks charging at once through standard CCS2 ports. This is made possible by the built-in battery storage and intelligent energy management, which draws and stores electricity during off-peak hours or when renewable sources like solar are available, then redistributes it efficiently during peak demand or high-use periods.
This capability is particularly valuable for depots operating on limited electrical access. For instance, a logistics hub in a semi-urban region might only have access to 200 kW from the grid—normally enough for just 2–3 trucks charging at once. With MAN's Smart Charging Cube, those same 200 kW can support charging across 8–12 vehicles by strategically managing loads and drawing on stored energy as needed.
It also ensures equal energy allocation, meaning no vehicle receives priority over others unless programmed, avoiding scenarios where one truck completes its charge while others lag behind unnecessarily.
Plug-and-Play for Fleets, Integrators, and OEMs
The Smart Charging Cube was designed with plug-and-play compatibility in mind, accommodating various electric trucks beyond MAN’s own line-up. As electric fleets tend to include mixed OEMs, the system supports open protocols like OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), ensuring interoperability with charging management platforms and telematics systems.
This open architecture opens doors for collaboration with fleet integrators, third-party energy consultants, and depot architects looking to futureproof their infrastructure with minimal technical friction. In practical terms, MAN wants the Smart Charging Cube to be more than just a charging product—it’s a platform for smarter fleet energy operations.
Designed and Tested with Real-World Logistics in Mind
According to MAN, the Smart Charging Cube has undergone rigorous testing at its eMobility Center in Munich, where it was trialed under real-world logistics scenarios, including urban delivery fleets, overnight depot charging, and fast-turnaround daytime operations.
Field testing revealed a 60–70% reduction in energy cost variability compared to unmanaged fast charging. Additionally, downtime caused by energy bottlenecks dropped by over 50%, which is a critical operational metric for fleet operators who rely on tightly scheduled deliveries.
The Cube also comes equipped with predictive diagnostics and AI-based performance monitoring, which allows operators to preemptively identify and resolve inefficiencies before they lead to delays or breakdowns in energy supply.
Empowering Fleet Managers with Smart Data Insights
The Cube’s connected software suite allows fleet operators to monitor and manage every charging session in real time. Through an intuitive dashboard, users can track energy consumption per vehicle, optimize charging schedules based on route needs, and even generate sustainability reports to demonstrate CO₂ savings.
In an era where environmental compliance is as much about reporting as performance, having these built-in analytics helps operators stay ahead of regulatory requirements. MAN also hinted that carbon credit integrations may follow in future software releases, allowing fleet managers to leverage their zero-emission operations for additional revenue streams under EU or national schemes.
Reducing Grid Dependency for a Resilient Energy Transition
One of the largest pain points for EV fleet transitions is dependency on local grid enhancements. In some regions, waiting for a utility to install higher-capacity connections can take months or even years—delaying green fleet rollouts and stranding electric vehicles in parking lots.
By embedding energy storage directly within the charging station, the Smart Charging Cube enables quasi off-grid operation and provides backup power in the event of outages. It also opens the door for solar integration or connection to localized microgrids, further decoupling EV charging from the limitations of central grid systems.
In this regard, MAN’s innovation doesn’t just support EV fleets—it’s helping build a more resilient transport energy ecosystem, especially critical in times of geopolitical instability or fluctuating energy supply.
Part of MAN’s Broader Electrification Strategy
The unveiling of the Smart Charging Cube aligns with MAN Truck & Bus’s broader ambition to lead Europe’s commercial vehicle electrification. The company is investing heavily in battery-electric trucks, including the eTGX and eTGS models, both set to dominate heavy-duty long-haul routes by 2030.
Alongside vehicle development, MAN recognizes that charging infrastructure is the linchpin to adoption. By offering end-to-end solutions—from vehicles to software to infrastructure—it aims to remove barriers and accelerate EV adoption among fleet customers in Europe and beyond.
In fact, MAN is already in talks with logistics players in Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia to deploy pilot installations of the Cube in Q4 2025, with full commercial rollout expected by mid-2026.
Industry Response: Anticipation and Opportunity
Industry analysts and fleet customers have already responded with interest. Several European last-mile and mid-mile logistics firms are exploring deployments, especially in high-traffic urban areas where noise restrictions and emissions regulations are tightening year by year.
“The Smart Charging Cube is what we’ve been waiting for,” said an operations manager at a leading German parcel delivery firm. “We’ve had EV trucks sitting idle because we didn’t have the right infrastructure. This could change everything.”
Experts also view the Smart Charging Cube as a model that could be adopted globally, particularly in regions like India, Southeast Asia, or Latin America where infrastructure constraints are more acute but demand for electrification is rapidly increasing.
The Road Ahead
As the EV transition in freight and logistics accelerates, solutions like MAN’s Smart Charging Cube may become industry benchmarks for how to deploy infrastructure smartly, efficiently, and affordably. More than a technical solution, it represents a strategic shift—one that sees EV infrastructure not as a hurdle, but as a customizable asset that works in harmony with operations and energy systems.
With pressure mounting from regulators, cities, and climate goals, fleet operators no longer have the luxury of waiting. MAN’s Smart Charging Cube might just be the tool that lets them charge ahead.
