German aviation investigators have found that a misplaced locking pin was involved in the nose gear collapse of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Frankfurt Airport last month, according to an interim investigation report released on Thursday.
The incident occurred on June 4 as a Lufthansa Boeing 787-9 was being prepared for a scheduled long-haul flight to Los Angeles. The aircraft was parked at a terminal gate when its nose landing gear unexpectedly retracted, causing the front of the aircraft to collapse.
The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) said the locking pin, which is designed to secure the nose landing gear during maintenance, had not been inserted before the incident. Instead, investigators found the pin inside a storage box in the aircraft's forward cargo hold, indicating it had not been used as required.
According to the report, 28 people were on board the aircraft at the time, including technicians, flight crew members, and ground staff. Six additional people outside the aircraft were directly involved in the incident. Several staff members sustained injuries, but no passengers were on board because the aircraft was still undergoing pre-flight preparations.
Investigators stressed that the inquiry remains ongoing and that the interim report does not determine the final cause of the accident. A comprehensive analysis, including conclusions on contributing factors and safety recommendations, is expected in the final report, which is anticipated to be released in about one year.
The incident has drawn attention to maintenance procedures and safety checks for commercial aircraft, particularly during ground operations before departure.
Authorities have not announced whether any operational changes or additional inspections will be introduced while the investigation continues.
