Mumbai Metro Line 3 to Fully Open by Dussehra Boosting Connectivity

Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, is nearing full operational status. Authorities have announced that the entire line is expected to open by Dussehra, which falls on October 2 this year. This 33.5-kilometer underground corridor will connect Colaba in South Mumbai to Aarey in the western suburbs. It promises to transform the daily travel experience for millions of commuters in the city.

Phased Openings Leading to Full Launch

The Aqua Line has been developed in multiple phases to ensure safety and smooth integration with the city’s existing transport network.

  • Phase 1: Aarey Colony to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) began operations in October 2024.

  • Phase 2: BKC to Worli was launched in May 2025.

  • Phase 3: Worli to Cuffe Parade is currently undergoing safety checks and inspections by the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

Once the final safety approvals are completed, the entire 33.5-kilometer corridor will be operational by Dussehra, providing uninterrupted metro services across the city.

Enhancing Commuter Experience

Once fully operational, the Aqua Line is expected to serve approximately 1.3 million passengers every day. The metro trains will run at intervals of 3–4 minutes during peak hours. Each train can carry around 2,500 passengers, which will significantly reduce road congestion and overcrowding on suburban trains.

The line will also integrate seamlessly with other major transport networks in Mumbai, including:

  • Mumbai Suburban Railway

  • Metro Lines 1 and 2

  • Upcoming Metro Line 5

Major interchange stations, including Mumbai Central, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Dadar, and Churchgate, will allow passengers to switch lines easily. This integration will make commuting faster and more convenient across different parts of the city.

Project Milestones and Achievements

The Aqua Line has already made a noticeable impact on city traffic. Even the first operational stretch between Aarey and BKC helped reduce about 650,000 car trips daily. The BKC–Worli stretch, which opened earlier this year, recorded over 32,000 passengers in just two days, highlighting the strong demand for this metro service.

The full operation of the Aqua Line will provide a reliable alternative to crowded suburban trains. This will encourage more people to use public transport, reducing the stress of daily commuting.

Additionally, the metro line will offer convenient connectivity to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, which is set to open soon. Passengers traveling to and from the airport will benefit from a faster and more efficient commute.

The completion of Mumbai Metro Line 3 marks an important milestone in the city’s public transport development. By providing a fast, eco-friendly, and reliable travel option, the Aqua Line is expected to ease traffic, improve commuting times, and transform daily travel for millions of residents.

With the final inspections underway and the official launch scheduled around Dussehra, the city is preparing to welcome a modern, efficient, and highly integrated metro service that will benefit both daily commuters and occasional travelers.
