Mumbai | June 2025 – Mumbai has taken a bold step toward solving its traffic troubles with a fleet of 11 electric hydrofoil ferries, making it the largest such fleet in the world. This new way of traveling comes from a smart partnership between Mumbai-based JalVimana and Swedish tech company Candela.
Smooth Travel on Water
These modern ferries, known as the Candela P-12 Shuttle, glide above water using hydrofoils—special wings under the boat that lift it up. This allows the ferry to move smoothly, without waves or splashes, and with very little energy.
Travel Time Slashed!
Zoom from Gateway of India to Alibaug or Elephanta Island in just 25-30 mins – no more 2-3 hour road trips!
Coming soon: a quick ride to Navi Mumbai Airport in place of a long 90-minute journey!
Vision for Clean Travel
JalVimana’s CEO, Niraj Thakur, said,
“This is not just a transport project; it’s about rethinking how Mumbai moves.”
Candela’s CEO, Gustav Hasselskog, added,
“We are proud to bring this clean, fast, and quiet solution to Mumbai, making it a global model for water-based transport.”
What Makes It Special
Mumbai is the first city in Asia to adopt Candela’s electric hydrofoil ferries. With this step, the Maharashtra government hopes to turn Mumbai’s coastline into a smart, sustainable transport network.
This is not just about commuting—it’s about building a better, greener future for the city.
