NASA and SpaceX have announced a target date for the return of the Crew-11 mission from the International Space Station, marking the next important step in the crew’s journey back to Earth. According to NASA, the spacecraft is expected to undock no earlier than 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday, January 14, as long as weather conditions allow a safe return.
Crew-11 was launched to the space station aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Florida in August 2025. Since then, the astronauts have been living and working in space, carrying out scientific research, maintaining station systems, and supporting ongoing experiments that help scientists better understand life in space.
The planned return comes after NASA earlier said it was considering an early landing due to what it described as a “medical concern” involving one of the astronauts. While the agency did not share specific details, it stressed that astronaut safety is always the top priority. NASA officials continue to monitor the crew’s health closely as preparations for the return move forward.
The process of bringing astronauts home is carefully planned. Before undocking, teams on the ground and in space must check the spacecraft, review weather conditions at possible landing sites, and confirm that all systems are working properly. Even after undocking, the capsule’s journey back to Earth depends on safe sea and wind conditions for splashdown.
NASA’s partnership with SpaceX has become a key part of the United States’ human spaceflight program. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsules now regularly carry astronauts to and from the space station, reducing reliance on other countries for transport and allowing more frequent missions.
If the January 14 timeline holds, Crew-11’s return will bring months of work in orbit to a close. After landing, the astronauts will undergo medical checks and begin a recovery period as their bodies readjust to Earth’s gravity. Their mission data and research results will continue to be studied for years to come.
For now, NASA says all plans remain dependent on weather and final safety reviews. As the target date approaches, mission teams will keep assessing conditions to ensure the crew’s return is as smooth and safe as possible.
