PM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram’s First Railway Line Connecting Aizawl

Post by : Meena Rani

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mizoram's first-ever railway line, the Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge project. This historic railway project finally connects Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, with India’s national railway network. The inauguration marks a landmark moment for the state, opening doors to better connectivity, economic growth, and development in Mizoram.

The project, which was sanctioned in 2008–09, took several years to complete due to the challenging terrain of the northeastern hills. Work on the Bairabi–Sairang railway line officially began in 2015. The railway line stretches over 51.38 kilometers and passes through difficult mountainous areas, making it one of the most complex railway projects in the country.

Engineering Feats: Tunnels, Bridges, and Stations

The railway line includes 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges, along with 10 road overpasses and underpasses. One of the most remarkable achievements of the project is Bridge No. 144 near Sairang, which stands at 114 meters tall, making it the highest railway pier bridge in India, even taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.

Four new railway stations have been constructed along the line: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang. These stations will serve local communities, helping students, traders, and travelers commute more easily. The railway reduces travel time from Bairabi to Aizawl from six to seven hours by road to under two hours by train, providing a faster, safer, and more affordable option for travel.

New Train Services to Enhance Connectivity

Along with inaugurating the railway line, Prime Minister Modi also flagged off three long-distance express train services:

  • Sairang–Delhi Rajdhani Express: Connects Aizawl directly to Delhi, the national capital.

  • Sairang–Guwahati Express: Links Mizoram with Assam, promoting trade and travel in the northeast region.

  • Sairang–Kolkata Express: Provides direct access from Mizoram to Kolkata, expanding tourism and business opportunities.

These train services are expected to start regular operations soon, giving residents and tourists more travel choices and stronger connectivity with other states.

PM Modi’s Vision for Mizoram

During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the Bairabi–Sairang railway line will transform the lives of the people in Mizoram. He stated that the project overcame difficult geographical challenges and reflects the government’s commitment to regional development. The Prime Minister emphasized that better connectivity will create opportunities in education, healthcare, trade, tourism, and local industry, ultimately improving the quality of life in Mizoram.

Aizawl Joins the National Rail Network

With this project, Aizawl becomes the fourth northeastern state capital to be connected by rail after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar. The new railway line integrates Mizoram more closely with the rest of India and is expected to bring economic growth, tourism, and improved accessibility to remote areas.

Future Developments

The success of the Bairabi–Sairang railway project sets a foundation for further infrastructure development in Mizoram. Plans are in place to extend the railway network further, and Sairang station is set to be developed as a modern, world-class facility to handle growing passenger demand and future expansion. This project is a major step in modernizing the transport infrastructure of Mizoram and connecting it with the broader national economy.
