Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development works worth ₹34,200 crore in Gujarat. The event, held in Bhavnagar, was conducted under the “Samudra se Samriddhi” initiative. It aims to transform India's coastal economy and infrastructure through a mix of maritime sector projects, renewable energy initiatives, and robust investments in healthcare and connectivity.

During the roadshow and mass gathering, PM Modi highlighted that self-reliance in Gujarat and across India is no longer optional—it’s essential. He asserted that dependence on foreign systems and suppliers has long held the nation back, particularly in strategic sectors like shipping, port operations, and clean energy. His speech reflected the principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat, a broader national strategy for strengthening India’s internal capabilities.

Of the total investment, ₹7,870 crore has been allocated specifically for maritime development projects in Gujarat, notably in Bhavnagar. These include port modernization, the development of new cruise terminals, ship-repair hubs, and coastal protection efforts such as sea-walls and shoreline stabilization. These initiatives aim to reduce India's reliance on international shipping infrastructure and create a globally competitive port ecosystem.

A significant portion—over ₹26,000 crore—is earmarked for infrastructure and renewable energy projects in Gujarat. These range from solar village upgrades like in Dhordo, to large-scale green energy plant installations and solar power integration for rural and semi-urban areas. Additionally, multiple hospital expansion efforts are underway in Bhavnagar and Jamnagar to strengthen healthcare delivery in both cities.

PM Modi also laid foundation stones for major infrastructure works such as the 70 km four-laning of national highways, construction of LNG terminals, and improvements in urban transport systems. These upgrades are part of India’s broader ambition to achieve coastal and infrastructure development in Gujarat, aligning with global logistics and trade standards.

On the national level, Modi inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock and launched works at key ports including the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, Tuna Tekra terminal, and expansion projects at Paradip Port and Kamarajar Port. These are landmark steps in the port modernization and cruise terminal development in India, and part of the government’s push to revive India’s maritime dominance.

Speaking at the event, Modi stressed the urgency of restoring India’s maritime legacy. "Our coastline is our strength, but our dependency on foreign vessels has become our weakness," he said. His remarks underscore a shift in governance towards self-reliant maritime infrastructure, job creation, and long-term industrial growth.

The inclusion of renewable energy Gujarat projects in the ₹34,200 crore package shows a strong policy direction toward clean energy solutions, village electrification, and sustainable development. This also aids India’s climate commitments while reducing fossil fuel dependence.

These major investments are also expected to stimulate local job creation, improve logistics and transportation, and reinforce the regional economy. They fit within the framework of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat infrastructure strategy, aimed at improving internal capacities and reducing vulnerabilities from global disruptions.
