Russia Fires Hypersonic Oreshnik Missile at Ukraine, Kyiv Denies Attack

Post by : Saif

Russia has fired its advanced hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a target in Ukraine, marking the second time this weapon has been used in the ongoing conflict. The Russian Defence Ministry said the strike was a response to an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences. Ukraine has denied the claim, calling it false.

The Oreshnik missile, which Russia describes as traveling more than ten times the speed of sound, is designed to carry both nuclear and conventional warheads. Officials said the missile used in this strike carried a conventional warhead and targeted energy facilities and drone production plants in Ukraine. Moscow also reported using attack drones and high-precision long-range weapons alongside the missile strike.

The governor of Ukraine’s western Lviv region confirmed that a Russian strike hit an infrastructure target, which some social media reports identified as a large underground gas storage facility. Ukrainian authorities are still assessing the impact of the strike.

Russia first used the Oreshnik in November 2024, targeting a military factory in Ukraine. On that occasion, Ukrainian sources reported limited damage and said the missile carried dummy warheads. Russian President Putin has claimed that even a conventional Oreshnik has destructive power comparable to a nuclear weapon, though some Western officials remain skeptical about the missile’s effectiveness in battle.

The deployment of the Oreshnik missile system in Belarus, Russia’s close ally, signals Moscow’s intent to strengthen its ability to strike targets across Europe if a larger conflict arises. Analysts warn that the use of such hypersonic weapons could escalate tensions in the region and complicate ongoing peace efforts.

While Russia claims the strike was retaliatory, international observers and Ukrainian officials question the justification, warning that misinformation and military escalation could further destabilize the region.

The Oreshnik missile incident highlights both the risks of advanced weapons in modern conflicts and the continuing tension between Russia and Ukraine, as the war enters another uncertain phase.
