Sabarmati High-Speed Rail Hub Sets Green Example With IGBC Certification

Post by : Saif

The Sabarmati high-speed rail multi-modal hub has achieved an important milestone by earning a green building rating from the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). This recognition marks a major step forward in India’s effort to build modern transport systems that are also friendly to the environment.

The Sabarmati hub is a key part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor. Designed as a multi-modal centre, it connects high-speed trains with metro services, city buses, taxis, and other forms of transport. This makes travel easier for passengers while reducing traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas.

The IGBC green rating is awarded to buildings that follow strict environmental standards. These standards focus on saving energy, using water wisely, reducing waste, and creating healthy spaces for people. The Sabarmati hub met these requirements through careful planning and smart design.

One of the key features of the hub is its energy-efficient systems. The building uses modern lighting that consumes less power and allows maximum use of natural daylight. This reduces the need for artificial lighting during the day and helps cut electricity use. Energy-efficient air systems also help maintain comfort while using less power.

Water conservation is another major focus of the project. The hub includes rainwater harvesting systems that collect and store rainwater for reuse. Water-saving fixtures have been installed to reduce daily water consumption. Treated wastewater is reused for cleaning and landscaping, lowering the demand for fresh water.

The project also follows strong waste management practices. Construction waste was handled carefully, with materials reused or recycled wherever possible. The building has systems to separate waste, making recycling easier and reducing the amount sent to landfills.

Passenger comfort and health were also considered in the design. The hub provides good air quality, open spaces, and natural ventilation in several areas. These features create a cleaner and more pleasant environment for travelers and staff.

Officials involved in the project say the IGBC rating proves that large infrastructure projects can be both advanced and environmentally responsible. They believe the Sabarmati hub will serve as a model for future railway stations and transport centres across the country.

As India continues to expand its transport network, projects like the Sabarmati high-speed rail hub show that development does not have to come at the cost of nature. By combining speed, connectivity, and sustainability, the hub represents a forward-looking approach to infrastructure.

The IGBC recognition is not just an award but a sign of changing priorities. It reflects a growing understanding that green buildings are essential for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
