South Korea's exports posted stronger-than-expected growth in July, supported by rising global demand for semiconductors and computers used in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Preliminary government trade data showed exports climbed 62.8% year-on-year to $98.89 billion, exceeding economists' expectations of a 59% increase.
Although the growth rate was lower than June's 70.7% surge, it remained one of the strongest export performances in decades, highlighting continued strength in the country's technology-driven economy.
The biggest contributor to export growth was the semiconductor industry. Chip exports jumped 179% from a year earlier as memory chip prices continued to rise amid sustained global demand for AI applications and advanced computing.
Computer exports also recorded exceptional growth, soaring 404% as major global technology companies continued investing heavily in AI infrastructure, cloud computing, and data centres.
The latest trade figures underline how artificial intelligence investments are reshaping global technology markets. Demand for advanced memory chips, graphics processors, and AI computing equipment has remained strong despite concerns about slowing technology spending earlier this year.
South Korea's major chipmakers have continued reporting robust earnings, supported by long-term supply agreements and expectations that global semiconductor demand will remain elevated over the coming years.
South Korea recorded strong export growth to its major trading partners during July.
The recovery in Middle East exports signals a gradual normalization of trade flows following disruptions caused by regional geopolitical tensions.

Imports rose 26.5% to $68.56 billion, broadly matching market expectations. As exports continued to outpace imports, South Korea recorded a trade surplus of $30.32 billion in July, following a record surplus in the previous month.
The latest figures reinforce South Korea's position as one of the world's leading semiconductor exporters, with AI-driven demand continuing to play a major role in supporting economic growth and international trade.
