Switzerland Mourns as Authorities Struggle to Identify Victims of Crans-Montana Bar Fire

Post by : Saif

Switzerland is in mourning after a tragic fire killed around 40 people at a crowded bar during New Year’s Eve celebrations in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana. As the nation grieves, officials are carrying out a slow and emotional task: identifying the victims of one of the worst tragedies in modern Swiss history.

The fire broke out at Le Constellation, a popular basement bar packed with mostly young people welcoming the new year. According to authorities and survivors, the flames spread very quickly, filling the space with heat and smoke and leaving many people trapped inside. More than 115 people were injured, many with serious burns.

Swiss officials have said that the condition of the bodies makes identification extremely difficult. Because of severe burns, normal methods cannot be used in many cases. As a result, experts are relying on dental records and DNA testing. This process is careful and time-consuming, and authorities have warned that it may take several days before all victims are identified.

Mayor Nicolas Feraud of Crans-Montana said the most important goal is to correctly name every victim. He stressed that families must only be informed when there is complete certainty. Giving wrong information in such a painful situation would cause even more harm.

Mathias Reynard, the head of government in the Valais region, explained that officials understand how painful the waiting is for families. However, he said accuracy is essential because the news is deeply sensitive. Only confirmed information will be shared with relatives.

Across Switzerland and beyond, parents and loved ones of missing young people are anxiously searching for answers. Many families have issued public appeals, hoping to hear any news about those who did not return home. Foreign embassies are also involved, checking whether their citizens were among the victims.

The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated. Authorities have said there is no sign of an attack. Early reports from survivors and videos shared online suggest that sparkling candles used during the celebration may have come too close to the ceiling, possibly starting the fire. If confirmed, the tragedy would be the result of a terrible accident.

The normally lively and safe town of Crans-Montana has been left stunned. Known for tourism, skiing, and outdoor sports, it is a place where many residents know each other. Several locals said they recognized victims and felt shocked that such a disaster could happen in their community.

On Thursday night, hundreds of residents gathered near the bar to honor the victims. They stood quietly, lit candles, and placed flowers near the police cordon. Some wept openly, while others comforted one another in silence.

Police said that some victims were still inside the bar as forensic teams continued their work. Authorities promised to work day and night until every victim is identified and every family receives answers.

This tragedy has deeply shaken Switzerland and raised fresh concerns about fire safety in crowded indoor spaces. As investigations continue, the country waits with heavy hearts, hoping that families will soon receive clarity and that lessons will be learned to prevent such loss in the future.
