Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te has said that Taiwan should strengthen trade and economic cooperation with democratic countries rather than China. His comments came during a time of active talks between Taiwan and the United States on future economic and technology partnerships.
Speaking at the presidential office in Taipei, President Lai said Taiwan is moving in the right direction economically. He added that the island has the ability and confidence to work with democratic partners to create future growth and stability. According to him, cooperation with like-minded countries will help Taiwan take a stronger role in the global economy.
Last week, senior officials from Taiwan and the United States held high-level economic talks. These discussions focused on areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced technology, drones, and critical minerals. The U.S. State Department described Taiwan as an important and trusted partner.
During the talks, both sides signed statements on economic security. They also agreed to cooperate under the Pax Silica Declaration, a U.S.-led effort aimed at protecting artificial intelligence and semiconductor supply chains. These industries are becoming more important as global competition increases, especially with China.
President Lai praised the results of the talks and said Taiwan is ready to work closely with democratic countries such as the United States, Japan, and European nations. He pointed out that Taiwan’s economy has grown faster since 2016, when his Democratic Progressive Party took office.
He compared this period with the earlier years under the Kuomintang government, which focused heavily on economic ties with China. Lai questioned whether Taiwan should return to that approach or continue building partnerships with democratic allies.
His remarks came as a senior member of the opposition Kuomintang party was visiting Beijing for discussions on topics like artificial intelligence and tourism. Lai said the opposition has its own views, but stressed that Taiwan must carefully choose its economic future.
China claims Taiwan as its territory, a claim that Taiwan strongly rejects. Beijing has refused to talk with President Lai, calling him a separatist. Lai has responded by saying that only the people of Taiwan have the right to decide their future. He also repeated his offer to talk with China, but only on equal and respectful terms.
The situation shows the challenges Taiwan faces as it balances trade, politics, and security. For now, the government’s message is clear: Taiwan wants to move forward by working with democratic partners and staying open to the world.
