Thane's long-awaited dream of a metro connection is finally taking shape, with the trial run of Metro Line 4A scheduled for Monday, September 22, 2025. This marks a significant step forward in the city's efforts to tackle the ever-growing traffic congestion, especially along the heavily burdened Ghodbunder Road. The ceremonial flag-off will be conducted in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar.
The trial run on the Metro 4A line — a critical extension of the Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavali Metro-4 corridor — is not just a test of transportation infrastructure but a moment of civic pride for the residents of Thane.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading the 32.32 km-long Metro Line 4 project, and the Metro 4A extension is a 2.7 km stretch that connects Kasarvadavali to Gaimukh. This project is part of the state’s larger transportation master plan aimed at integrating suburban and metro connectivity across Mumbai’s peripheral zones.
The trial phase will focus on the 10.5 km stretch from Cadbury Junction to Gaimukh, which is nearly complete and expected to open for public use by the end of 2025, pending final safety approvals. This portion is part of the broader Metro 4A expansion, designed to serve commuters in Thane and reduce dependency on road transport.
The 10 Metro stations where the trial run will be conducted are Cadbury, Majiwada, Kapoorbawadi, Manpada, Tikuji-ni-wadi, Dongri Pada, Vijay Garden, Kasarvadavali, Gavanpada, and Gaimukh. This alignment ensures easy access to key residential and commercial pockets, connecting some of Thane’s most congested junctions through a rapid transit alternative.
For decades, Ghodbunder Road has been a chokepoint in Thane’s urban planning. As the city grew, the arterial road that links the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway became a symbol of bottlenecked growth. The metro offers a potential solution by reducing pressure on this road and encouraging public transport usage.
Eknath Shinde, who has long advocated for metro connectivity in Thane, recalled protests held 20 years ago demanding such infrastructure. “We were suspended from the Assembly for this cause. Today, we are proud to witness the fruits of that struggle,” he said.
Transport Minister and Thane MLA Pratap Sarnaik, who also posted updates on social media, emphasized the effort behind the scenes: “Since 2014, we have relentlessly followed up on this project. This is a historic moment for every Thanekar.”
The inauguration also carries political weight. With the Mahayuti alliance in power, leaders from both the BJP and Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) are highlighting the metro as a joint governance success — a showcase of progress delivered after years of promises.
The Thane Metro is part of a longer-term infrastructure push in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Metro 4A, the shorter 2.7 km link to Gaimukh, is 90% complete and on track for end-of-year commissioning.
The larger Metro 4 line, extending from Wadala to Kasarvadavali, is segmented into three phases: Phase 1 (Kasarvadavali to Cadbury Junction): Completion by December 2025; Phase 2 (Cadbury to Gandhinagar): Targeted for 2026; Phase 3 (Gandhinagar to Wadala): Slated for 2027. In total, 32 metro stations will service the corridor, making it one of the most transformative urban transport projects in the Mumbai region.
Thane Metro 4A is expected to boost real estate demand along the corridor. Stations like Manpada, Kapoorbawadi, and Tikuji-ni-wadi are already witnessing developer interest. Improved mobility often correlates with price appreciation and urban densification — trends that are likely to accelerate once full operations begin.
Moreover, this metro expansion will seamlessly connect to existing and upcoming lines, including Metro 5 and Metro 11, ultimately easing the burden on the Central Railway line, which currently sees some of the highest commuter loads in Asia.
While the trial run is a step forward, challenges remain. These include land acquisition delays, coordination with local municipal bodies, and maintaining construction timelines. The success of the trial phase will be closely watched, not just by residents but also by civic planners, real estate developers, and transit experts across the state.
With upcoming festival traffic and the onset of the winter wedding season, road congestion in Thane is likely to spike. The trial run of Metro 4A acts both as a logistical test and a symbolic promise that relief is on the way. It also sets the stage for faster rollout of other metro corridors, encouraging public trust in government infrastructure projects.
For those tracking urban development in India, the trial run underscores how Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities are scaling up urban mobility — not just in core business districts but across emerging residential hubs.
