On the morning of Monday, February 16, 2026, a regional passenger train in southern Switzerland overturned after it was hit by what police say was likely an avalanche in the Alps. The accident took place near the village of Goppenstein in the canton of Valais at about 7:00 a.m. local time. The train was traveling on the line between Goppenstein and Hohtenn when it left the tracks. At that time, there were 29 people on board. Police said that snow and debris from an avalanche may have fallen on the railway just moments before the train arrived. As a result of the derailment, five people were injured, with one person taken to a hospital in Sion and four others receiving medical care at the scene. All other passengers were safely evacuated. Emergency responders, including ambulances, a helicopter, mountain rescuers, and fire units, worked together to help those affected and secure the area.
Officials believe that an avalanche — a large mass of snow sliding down the mountain — hit or moved onto the tracks just before the train passed. Snowfall in the area has been heavy, and authorities had already warned that the risk of avalanches was high. The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Valais has opened an official investigation to determine exactly how the accident happened and whether avalanches were truly to blame. Train services on the route between Goppenstein and Brig — a typical route used by locals and tourists — have been suspended while officials clear the tracks and assess safety. Replacement bus services were arranged to help travellers reach their destinations.
This accident comes at a time when much of the Alps region is dealing with dangerous snow conditions. Heavy snow and shifting winds have made avalanches more likely. Authorities in Switzerland and neighbouring countries have warned the public to be cautious in mountain areas. Avalanches are powerful natural events. They can happen suddenly and move fast, carrying large amounts of snow down steep slopes. For people living near or travelling through the mountains, this is a serious risk during winter months when snow builds up. Switzerland is known for its reliable and safe railway network, used by millions every year. When an accident like this happens, it serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the need for constant safety planning and monitoring in places with severe weather risk. Train travel in the Alps is a daily necessity for many people, including workers, students, and tourists. Ensuring safety on mountain routes is always a priority for Switzerland’s authorities and rail operators.
