Einride and supermarket chain Lidl have started regular operations of a cab-less autonomous truck on public roads in Germany, marking a major step for driverless freight transport.
The Level 4 autonomous vehicle is being used to move goods between a Lidl distribution centre and a retail store. The truck operates without a human driver or safety operator inside the vehicle.
Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, known as KBA, has granted official permission for the operation. According to the companies, this is the first authorization of its kind issued in Germany for a cab-less autonomous truck operating on public roads.
The vehicle, developed by Swedish self-driving technology company Einride, is designed without a traditional driver's cabin. Its Level 4 autonomous technology allows it to perform driving tasks without a person controlling the vehicle during the approved operation.
The current deployment is part of Lidl's daily logistics activities. Goods are transported between designated locations along an approved route, providing a real-world test of autonomous freight operations.
KBA reportedly approved the deployment after an extensive safety validation process focused on the vehicle's performance under real-world road conditions.
The companies plan to expand the initial operation into a multi-stop delivery network, often described as a "milkrun" logistics system. Such a network can allow one autonomous vehicle to serve several locations during a delivery cycle.
Further deployments are also being discussed across other divisions of Lidl's parent company, Schwarz Group.
Expansion could provide Einride and Lidl with an opportunity to test autonomous trucks across a wider range of logistics routes and operating conditions.

Driver shortages remain an important challenge for logistics companies in several markets. Einride and Lidl said the autonomous truck project is intended to help address commercial driver shortages while improving the reliability of supply chains.
Regular driverless freight operations could eventually help companies move goods more efficiently, particularly on predictable routes between distribution facilities and retail locations.
Germany's approval of the cab-less truck also represents an important development for autonomous freight technology in Europe. If the initial deployment performs successfully, similar systems could see wider adoption in logistics and retail supply chains.
