A tragic sea accident near the Greek island of Chios has left at least 15 people dead after a speedboat carrying migrants collided with a Greek coast guard patrol vessel. The incident happened late Tuesday night in the eastern Aegean Sea, an area often used by migrants trying to reach Europe.
According to Greek authorities, the bodies of 14 people were recovered from the water shortly after the collision. They included 11 men and three women. Another woman who had been rescued later died in hospital, bringing the total death toll to at least 15. The coast guard said the search for missing people was still ongoing, as it was not clear how many passengers were on the boat at the time of the crash.
Rescue teams acted quickly after the collision. Four coast guard patrol vessels, a military helicopter, and a private boat with divers were sent to the area. Survivors were pulled from the sea and taken to safety. In total, 25 migrants were rescued, including around 11 children. All were taken to a hospital on Chios for medical treatment. Two coast guard officers were also injured and received care.
Video footage from local media showed emergency workers carrying injured people wrapped in blankets and helping children, some of whom appeared hurt and frightened. Blue emergency lights lit up the port as rescue teams worked through the night.
Greek authorities have not yet explained exactly how the collision happened. An investigation is expected to determine the cause of the crash and whether speed, weather, or other factors played a role.
Hospital staff on Chios were placed on full alert following the incident. The head of Greece’s public hospital workers’ union said doctors and nurses were ready to treat a large number of injured people. Several of the survivors required surgery, showing how serious the injuries were.
Greece is one of the main entry points into the European Union for migrants fleeing war, poverty, and instability in parts of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Many migrants attempt the dangerous sea crossing from the Turkish coast to nearby Greek islands. While the distance is short, the journey is often risky due to overcrowded boats, bad weather, and high-speed travel.
Fatal accidents at sea are sadly common. In recent years, Greece has increased sea patrols and tightened migration controls. Authorities say this has reduced the number of crossings, but it has also led to criticism from human rights groups, who accuse Greece of turning migrants away without allowing them to apply for asylum.
Across Europe, migration remains a deeply debated issue. Many European Union countries have introduced tougher migration rules, including faster deportations and longer detention periods. While the number of asylum seekers has fallen compared to a decade ago, tragedies like the one near Chios highlight the human cost of migration and the dangers faced by those seeking safety and a better life.
As search efforts continue, families of the victims wait for answers. The incident has once again raised serious questions about safety at sea, migration policy, and the need to prevent further loss of life.
