Scania Unveils Advanced Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain for Buses and Coaches

Post by : Avinab Raana

Swedish manufacturer Scania has unveiled its latest innovation: a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain designed specifically for buses and coaches. This new platform combines a 13-liter diesel engine with dual electric motors and an 89 kWh battery, offering a sustainable solution for public and long-distance transport.

Advanced Powertrain Configuration

The heart of Scania's new PHEV system is its 13-liter diesel engine, which boasts an 8% improvement in fuel efficiency over its predecessor. This engine is paired with dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 389 horsepower (290 kW). The 89 kWh battery, developed in-house by Scania, enables an all-electric range of up to 80 kilometers (approximately 50 miles) on a full charge. Charging is facilitated through a CCS2 plug, supporting DC fast charging at 130 kW and 200 amps, allowing for quick recharging during operational breaks.

Emission Reduction and Urban Compliance

One of the primary advantages of this PHEV system is its ability to operate in zero-emission zones. When entering urban areas with stringent emission regulations, the system can automatically switch to electric-only mode, ensuring compliance without compromising on performance. This feature is particularly beneficial for long-distance coaches that frequently travel through cities with such zones.

Enhanced Operational Flexibility

Scania's PHEV platform offers operators enhanced flexibility. The system can operate in four modes: electric, hybrid, charge-sustaining, and forced charging. This versatility allows for optimal energy management based on route requirements and charging infrastructure availability. Additionally, the platform's design ensures compatibility with Scania's existing bus and coach models, facilitating seamless integration into current fleets.

Sustainability and Cost Efficiency

Beyond emission reductions, the new powertrain offers significant fuel savings. The combined efficiency of the diesel engine and electric motors results in up to 8% lower fuel consumption compared to traditional systems. This not only reduces operational costs but also contributes to Scania's commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

Industry Reception and Future Prospects

Scania’s launch of its new PHEV bus and coach platform represents a major step in sustainable mobility. By combining diesel reliability with electric efficiency, this hybrid system provides fleet operators with flexibility, cost savings, and compliance with urban emission standards. As cities worldwide strive for greener public transport, Scania’s innovation highlights how hybrid technologies can bridge today’s operational needs with tomorrow’s sustainability goals.
