Atlas Air Iran adds VIP-configured MD-87 to expand premium fleet

Post by : Meena Rani

Iran-based airline Atlas Air has formally introduced a specially configured McDonnell Douglas MD-87 into its fleet. Unlike standard commercial aircraft, this MD-87 has been refurbished into a 25-seat V-VIP luxury configuration designed for premium travel, government delegations, and high-value charter operations. The aircraft completed its first official service on the Tehran–Kish–Tehran route, signaling the airline’s growing focus on premium aviation services.

Aircraft registration and entry into service

Industry fleet records confirm that the aircraft, carrying registration EP-SAT, joined Atlas Air earlier this year. While it had already appeared in databases by May 2025, Atlas Air officially announced the aircraft’s addition in mid-September. The company described it as part of its new “premium class” service expansion, aimed at providing elite passengers with greater comfort and exclusive facilities.

Cabin configuration and features

The MD-87 has been extensively refurbished to carry just 25 passengers instead of the standard 100–130 seats normally seen in this type. The V-VIP layout includes full lie-flat seats, modern in-flight entertainment systems, satellite-phone connectivity, workspace tables, and specialized catering options. Additional features such as gaming console connections and upgraded interiors have been highlighted by the airline as part of its push to attract both private and corporate charter clients.

Technical and historical context

The McDonnell Douglas MD-87 belongs to the MD-80 family, originally designed for short- to medium-haul routes. The aircraft typically operates with a range of 2,500 to 3,000 nautical miles, powered by Pratt & Whitney JT8D-series engines. First introduced in the late 1980s, the MD-87 was known for its shorter fuselage compared to other MD-80 variants, making it suitable for operations at airports with shorter runways. In VIP configurations, airlines reduce seating capacity to enhance comfort, privacy, and onboard amenities.

Atlas Air fleet strategy

Atlas Air’s decision to induct a luxury-configured MD-87 reflects a broader trend among Iranian airlines. With limited access to new Western-built aircraft due to international sanctions, many carriers in Iran are reintroducing or refurbishing older models like the MD-80 and Boeing 737 series. These aircraft are being adapted to niche markets such as premium tourism, business charters, and special government or humanitarian flights.

The MD-87’s introduction strengthens Atlas Air’s position in the growing Iranian premium aviation market, which seeks to link major cities like Tehran and Kish with services designed to support tourism development and foreign investment.

Industry perspective and operational challenges

While the induction of the MD-87 expands options for VIP and charter travel, it also raises important operational considerations. Older aircraft require strict maintenance regimes, reliable spare parts supply, and continuous oversight from civil aviation authorities to ensure safety and compliance. Atlas Air has emphasized that the aircraft is being operated under national aviation regulations, with close monitoring of its maintenance schedules.

This development highlights both opportunities and challenges in Iran’s aviation sector. On the one hand, the VIP MD-87 provides a rare premium offering in the domestic market, appealing to private customers, investors, and official delegations. On the other hand, it underscores the industry’s reliance on aging fleets and the creative strategies airlines are adopting to keep their services competitive despite restrictions on acquiring new aircraft.
